From studying Yokut baskets at the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, I began to draw and paint the iconographic designs and shapes of Native American baskets. During my 1990 artist residency in Yosemite, I continued to explore Native American basket making in my artwork. My paintings simultaneously reveal the utilitarian and artistic functions of traditional baskets. These unique pieces pay tribute to the women whose esthetics and craftsmanship were so important to the survival of Native American culture.
